Address verification
Confirming that an address exists and that it belongs to the person who gave it.
Address verification checks two things: that an address is real and deliverable, and that the person really lives there. The first part is often called address validation and only looks at the format and existence of the address. The second part ties it to a person.
How it is done
- Validation against postal databases: is the street, number and postcode real?
- Comparing the address with an official document, such as an ID card that shows the address (not all do; passports don't).
- Proof of address documents, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
- Checks against trusted data sources, where they are available and permitted.
When it matters
Address details are part of customer due diligence in many regulated sectors, and they help with fraud checks, deliveries and tax residency. Many ID documents, passports included, don't show an address at all, so address verification is often a separate step from identity verification.
