Document verification
Checking that an identity document is genuine, valid and unaltered.
Document verification confirms that an ID document is real, belongs to a known document type, hasn't expired and hasn't been tampered with. It also reads the holder's data so nobody has to type it in.
What is checked
- Document type and country, against templates of known documents.
- Visual security features, layout and fonts.
- The machine-readable zone (MRZ) and its check digits.
- Consistency between the MRZ, the printed data and, where available, the chip.
- Signs of tampering, screen captures and photocopies.
- Expiry date.
Image checks versus chip checks
Checks on a photo of a document can be very good, but a skilled forgery or a high-quality screen replay can get close. Reading the chip via NFC and verifying its digital signature confirms the data cryptographically, which is the strongest form of document verification available remotely.
