The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 creates one framework for crypto in the EU. Rules for stablecoins have applied since 30 June 2024, and the rules for crypto-asset service providers since 30 December 2024, with national transition periods.
What it covers
- Authorisation of crypto-asset service providers, such as exchanges and custodians, with a passport across the EU.
- Rules for issuing and offering crypto-assets, including stablecoins.
- Conduct, custody and market abuse rules.
Related AML rules
Customer identification for crypto companies comes mainly from the EU AML rules and the transfer of funds regulation, which applies the "travel rule" to crypto transfers. Together, they make reliable KYC a standard part of running a crypto business in the EU.
