AMLR (EU Anti-Money Laundering Regulation)

The EU regulation that sets one anti-money-laundering rulebook across all member states.

The Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 is part of the EU's AML package adopted in 2024. Because it is a regulation rather than a directive, it applies directly in every member state instead of being transposed into 27 slightly different national laws. Most of its rules apply from 10 July 2027.

What changes

  • Harmonised customer due diligence rules, including how customers are identified and verified, also remotely.
  • Common rules on beneficial ownership.
  • An EU-wide cap of EUR 10,000 on cash payments for goods and services.
  • Crypto-asset service providers fully in scope.
  • Direct supervision of some high-risk firms by the new EU authority AMLA.

What it means for verification

For businesses that onboard customers in several EU countries, one set of rules makes it easier to run the same verification flow everywhere. Remote identification built on reliable sources, such as verified identity documents and eID, fits the direction of the regulation.
