Smurfing
Splitting large sums into many small transactions to avoid reporting thresholds.
Smurfing, also called structuring, is a money-laundering technique: a large amount is broken into many small deposits or transfers, often through several people or accounts, so that each one stays below the amounts that trigger checks or reports.
How it is detected
- Transaction monitoring that looks at patterns across time and accounts, not single payments.
- Linking accounts that share devices, documents or other identifiers.
- Strong identity verification at onboarding, so the people behind accounts are real and known.
