Identity fraud
Using someone else's identity, or a fake one, to get something you're not entitled to.
Identity fraud is the use of stolen, borrowed or fabricated identity details to open accounts, take out credit, receive payouts or get around age and access restrictions. Identity theft is usually the first step; identity fraud is what is done with the stolen data.
Common forms
- Impersonation with a stolen ID document.
- Forged or altered documents.
- Synthetic identities built from real and invented details.
- Money mules who let others use their verified accounts.
- Deepfakes and injection attacks to pass selfie checks.
Defences
Layered checks: a genuine document, a matching face, liveness, protection against injected video, and signals such as the same document or device appearing in several sign-ups.
