eIDAS 2.0 and the EU Digital Identity Wallet

The EU framework for electronic identification, including a digital identity wallet for every citizen.

eIDAS is the EU regulation on electronic identification and trust services such as electronic signatures. Its revision, Regulation (EU) 2024/1183, known as eIDAS 2.0, entered into force in May 2024 and requires member states to offer their citizens a European Digital Identity Wallet.

What the wallet does

  • Stores a person's verified identity data and other credentials on their phone.
  • Lets them share only selected attributes, for example proof of age, with a service.
  • Can be used to sign documents with a qualified electronic signature.
  • Must be accepted by certain private services, such as banks, when strong identification is required.

Relevance for Switzerland

Switzerland is not bound by eIDAS, but the Swiss e-ID and the swiyu wallet are designed with compatibility in mind, so Swiss and EU digital identities can work together in future.
