Authentication
Confirming that a returning user is the same person who set up the account.
Authentication answers "is this the account owner?", every time someone logs in or does something sensitive. Identity verification answers a different question, "is this person who they claim to be?", usually once, at onboarding.
Authentication factors
- Something you know: a password or PIN.
- Something you have: a phone, security key or passkey.
- Something you are: a fingerprint or face, matched on the device.
How the two work together
A typical setup verifies a customer's identity once with a document and selfie, then relies on authentication for everyday access. For high-risk actions, such as changing a payout account, a business can ask for a quick selfie that is matched against the face verified at onboarding.
