Identity verification
Confirming that a person is who they claim to be, usually with an ID document and a live selfie.
Identity verification answers one question: is this person who they say they are? Remotely, it typically combines a check that the ID document is genuine, a face match between the document photo and a selfie, and a liveness check that the person is really there.
The usual steps
- Capture the ID document, front and back, and read the chip if there is one.
- Check the document's authenticity and extract its data.
- Take a selfie and confirm liveness.
- Match the selfie with the document photo.
- Return a result, with the checks that were run, to the business.
Not the same as authentication
Verification establishes an identity, usually once. Authentication then confirms, at every login, that the returning user is the same person.
