Biometrics
Measuring physical or behavioural traits, like a face or fingerprint, to recognise a person.
Biometrics are characteristics of a person that can be measured and compared: the face, fingerprints, iris, voice, or behaviour such as typing rhythm. In identity verification, the face is by far the most common, because it can be captured with any phone camera and compared with the photo on an ID document.
Verification versus identification
- Biometric verification (1:1): is this face the same as the one on this document? This is what identity verification uses.
- Biometric identification (1:N): whose face is this, out of a large database? This is a different, more invasive use.
Biometric data and the law
Biometric data used to identify a person is treated as especially sensitive both under the Swiss Data Protection Act and the GDPR. That means a clear purpose, strong security and short retention. A verification provider should keep biometric data only as long as the check requires.
