Device fingerprinting
Recognising a device from its technical characteristics, without relying on cookies.
Device fingerprinting combines many small technical details, such as browser version, screen size, installed fonts and system settings, into an identifier that recognises a device on later visits. In fraud prevention, it helps spot one device opening many accounts.
Uses in fraud prevention
- Detecting many sign-ups or verification attempts from the same device.
- Noticing when an account is suddenly used from an unfamiliar device.
- Spotting emulators and manipulated environments used for injection attacks.
Privacy
Fingerprinting processes personal data and, depending on the jurisdiction and purpose, may require the same consent as cookies. Fraud prevention can be a legitimate purpose, but it has to be documented and proportionate.
