GDPR

The EU General Data Protection Regulation, which governs how personal data is processed.

The General Data Protection Regulation has applied since 25 May 2018. It sets rules for processing personal data of people in the EU and applies to companies outside the EU, including Swiss companies, when they offer services to or monitor people in the EU.

Key principles

  • A legal basis for every processing purpose.
  • Data minimisation, purpose limitation and limited retention.
  • Transparency towards the people whose data is processed.
  • Rights of access, correction, deletion and objection.
  • Appropriate security, and contracts with processors.

Biometric data under the GDPR

Biometric data processed to uniquely identify a person is a special category of personal data. Processing it requires one of the specific exceptions in the GDPR, such as explicit consent, and usually a data protection impact assessment.
