Identity theft
Stealing someone's personal information so it can be used to impersonate them.
Identity theft is the unauthorised acquisition of another person's personal information, such as their name, date of birth, ID document images or login details. It often happens through phishing, data breaches, malware or stolen mail.
Why stolen data alone isn't enough anymore
If a sign-up only asks for typed-in details, stolen data is all a fraudster needs. A check that requires the physical document, ideally with its chip, and the live face of its owner turns stolen data into something much harder to use.
