Synthetic identity fraud
Fraud using an identity built from a mix of real and invented details.
A synthetic identity combines real data, such as a stolen ID number or address, with invented details like a different name or an AI-generated face. Because no single real person is fully impersonated, nobody notices and reports it, so it can go undetected for a long time.
How synthetic identities are used
Fraudsters open accounts, build up a credit history or trust over months, and then take out as much as they can before disappearing. They are also used for mule accounts and bonus abuse.
Defences
A synthetic identity needs a document that looks genuine and a face that matches it. Chip-based document checks, liveness detection and deepfake detection make that much harder, and linking signals across sign-ups reveals reused elements.
