Video identification
Remote identity verification where a trained agent checks the person and document on a live video call.
In video identification, sometimes called Video-Ident, the customer joins a live video call. A trained agent asks them to show their ID document, checks its security features, compares the face with the photo and may ask questions, supported by software checks.
Pros and cons
- Human judgement for unusual cases.
- Limited by agent availability and opening hours.
- Slower and more expensive per verification than automated checks.
- Video calls can themselves be targeted with deepfakes.
In Switzerland
FINMA's circular on video and online identification sets out how financial intermediaries may identify customers remotely, by video or by automated online identification, and what each method requires.
