Digital onboarding
Signing up new customers fully online, including any identity checks.
Digital onboarding is the online process of turning a prospect into a customer: collecting details, verifying identity where needed, accepting terms and setting up the account, without a branch visit or paperwork in the post.
Where onboarding loses people
- Too many steps or fields before the customer sees any value.
- Switching devices, for example from a laptop to a phone for the camera.
- Unclear instructions when a document photo is rejected.
- Waiting for manual review.
Designing it well
Run only the checks the risk requires, explain why they are needed, make the handoff from desktop to phone easy (for example with a QR code), and give clear feedback when something fails. Measuring drop-off per step shows where to improve.
