Digital identity
The set of verified information that represents a person online.
A digital identity is the information that represents a person in digital services: name, date of birth, nationality, and the credentials they use to prove it. It can be as weak as a self-declared profile or as strong as a government-issued eID.
Levels of assurance
Not every digital identity can be trusted to the same degree. A name typed into a form proves nothing. An identity checked against a genuine document with a live face match is much stronger, and a state-issued eID in a digital wallet is stronger still. Regulations such as eIDAS define assurance levels for this reason.
Where it is heading
Government digital identities are arriving in Europe: the EU Digital Identity Wallet under eIDAS 2.0 and the Swiss e-ID in the swiyu wallet. They let people share selected, verified attributes, such as "over 18", instead of handing over a document.
