ZertES (Swiss Electronic Signatures Act)
The Swiss law that governs electronic signatures, seals and the providers that issue them.
The Federal Act on Certification Services in the Field of Electronic Signatures and Other Applications of Digital Certificates (ZertES) sets the legal framework for electronic signatures in Switzerland. Its revised version has been in force since 1 January 2017.
Qualified electronic signatures
Under Swiss law, a qualified electronic signature (QES) issued by a recognised provider is equivalent to a handwritten signature. Before issuing one, the provider has to establish the signer's identity reliably, in person or with an approved remote identification method.
Where identity verification comes in
Remote QES flows combine identity verification and signing: the person verifies their identity, a certificate is issued for them, and they sign, often in one session.
