Swiss e-ID and swiyu
Switzerland's state-issued electronic identity, held in the federal swiyu wallet app.
The Swiss e-ID is a free, voluntary electronic identity issued by the federal government. Swiss voters approved the Federal Act on Electronic Identity in September 2025. The e-ID is stored in swiyu, the federal digital wallet app, on the holder's own phone.
How it works
- People apply for the e-ID and verify themselves, with their passport or ID card and a face check.
- The verified identity is stored in the swiyu wallet, not in a central database of usage.
- When a service asks for information, the holder chooses what to share, for example only that they are over 18.
What it means for businesses
Once widely adopted, the e-ID gives businesses another strong way to verify Swiss customers and their age, alongside document-based verification. Most businesses will need to support both, since not everyone will use the e-ID and foreign customers won't have one.
