Liveness detection
Checking that a selfie comes from a real person who is present, not a photo, video or mask.
Liveness detection makes sure the face in front of the camera belongs to a living person at that moment. Without it, a face match can be fooled with a printed photo, a video played on a screen or a mask. The technical term for these checks is presentation attack detection (PAD).
Active and passive liveness
- Active liveness asks the user to do something, such as turn their head or follow a prompt.
- Passive liveness analyses a normal selfie or short video without extra steps.
- Passive is smoother for users; active adds signals. Many systems combine both depending on risk.
What liveness doesn't cover
Classic liveness looks at what the camera sees. Injected video that never passes through a camera needs separate checks on the capture itself.
