Face matching
Comparing a selfie with the photo on an ID document to confirm they show the same person.
Face matching compares a live capture of a person with the portrait on their identity document, or with the photo stored on the document's chip. It ties the document to whoever is presenting it.
The threshold trade-off
A face match produces a similarity score, and the business decides where to set the threshold. A strict threshold rejects more impostors but also more genuine users with bad lighting or an old document photo. A loose one is friendlier but lets more impostors through. The right setting depends on the use case and the cost of each kind of error.
What improves accuracy
- Using the chip photo instead of a photographed printed portrait.
- Good capture guidance: lighting, distance, no glare.
- Combining the match with liveness detection, so a photo of the right face can't be used.
